Storage Wars
June 24 - August 19, 2023
The Hole is proud to present our summer group exhibition featuring contributions from not just artists, but also Los Angeles art galleries and collectors.
Storage Wars grants visitors a peek inside the shipping crate, a hand-fabricated vessel that protects and all too often—when left for years in a storage facility,
archive or freeport—entombs some of the best and most precious work of art.

Title IX
June 21 - August 27, 2023
The Hole is proud to present Title IX a sports-themed group show across our two New York galleries, Bowery and Tribeca, curated by Charlotte Grüssing.
The exhibition’s title references the policy that requires educational institutions to treat all sexes and gender identities equally, widely known for its impact
on expanding opportunities for women and girls in sports. While celebrating women and historically excluded groups in sports, the exhibit highlights both
Title IX’s impacts and shortcomings while more broadly exploring the politics, pleasure and power of sports.

Printed Matter + Artsy are thrilled to present Printed Matter's Spring Benefit Auction featuring more than sevennty
artworks from contemporary artists in support of the organization's work on behalf of artists' books and publishing.
Browse lots and place bids before the sale closes on Tuesday, June 15th, at 12pm EDT.
The proceeds from this auction will provide vital support for Printed Matter, the world's leading
nonprofit organization dedicated to the distribution, understanding and appreciation of artists' books
and related publications. Founded in 1976, Printed Matter represents over 12,000 titles by some 6000 artists
from across the globe, and provides a broad range of free programs and services to artists and the public,
including events and exhibitions, Art Book Fairs, and a broad distribution platform through its two nonprofit
bookstores and its website printedmatter.org, one of the most extensive bibliographic databases for artists' publications in the world.
Funds raised in this benefit auction will play a critical role in Printed Matter's rebound from lost revenue due to the Covid pandemic,
and will help ensure that Printed Matter will continue to thrive into the future.
During the pandemic, Printed Matter has worked hard to support artists while connecting artists' books and audiences in new ways,
from its first-ever Virtual Art Book Fair to an ongoing calendar of online events addressing a broad range of themes in artists' publishing.
In these precarious and challenging times the importance of the work we do has become even more clear. Artists' books bring people together
and connect us — they open spaces for people to experiment, collaborate, explore, discover, and learn, and we need them more than ever.
We are deeply grateful for the generous support of our participating artists and donors.
Each work ships from a different location, as noted on the individual lot pages. Shipping costs are the responsibility of the buyer.
In conjunction with our Spring Benefit Auction hosted by Artsy, we are very pleased to present an online gallery of artworks to benefit
Printed Matter on printedmatter.org, featuring work by Leidy Churchman, Barbara Hammer, Tishan Hsu, Dave Muller, Kayode Ojo, and Michael E. Smith.
To contribute further critical support to Printed Matter, please visit HERE to donate.

From May 12th through June 20th, Printed Matter / St Marks will host a takeover by Misaki Kawai.
The store will have several of Kawai’s pettable, combable sculptures with Emoji-like faces, including
some recent works from her solo exhibition at The Hole, Moko Moko Doki Doki. Other works include two paintings,
a Lion Bench and several of her Arty Dolls. The takeover is organized in collaboration with The Hole.
Misaki Kawai shares open and inviting works with the public to build connection through art.
Her giant sculptures have rudimentary faces like emojis and are rated G, all ages. The paintings
circulate faces and text to show the rudimentary building blocks of the world, “chu” (kiss), “suki” (like),
“peko peko” (hungry), “pero pero” (licking), “kuru kuru” (spinning). Using mimetic word pairings Kawai creates
a zone of creative play; bold, colorful and immersive.
On this occasion we are also pleased to launch Kawai’s latest book MOKO MOKO DOKI DOKI,
available in five different (fuzzy) colors produced in a limited edition of 18 per color.

Made in her home in Los Angeles during quarantine, the series is inspired by omurice, a popular Japanese home food since the early 1900s.
Painted in her signature hasty, brushy intuitive style with puffy paint pens in synthetic colors, the new works on paper have a tactile puffy quality,
not unlike the Japanese omurice. An analogy with the hybrid creatures that morph considerably, changing color and form.
